Thought I would pass along this post from the Carolina Birds email
list regarding Peregrine Falcons nesting in the mountains just over
the border. Looks like the species is really doing well now (relatively
speaking) with 11 pairs in NC plus the 2 in the Smokies.

Hi everyone,

I ran into Tom Joyce yesterday at Devil's Courthouse on the BRP, and we
enjoyed watching the peregrine falcon chick stretching its wings. It should
fledge within a week. One of the adults was also nicely perched on a snag
for a great view. Tom and I agreed that I should post a summary for the
year. There were 11 occupied territories in the NC mountains, but only five
pairs successfully fledged young. The number of fledglings was down
slightly this year in comparison to the last couple of years.

Devil's Courthouse, Transylvania Co., 1 chick
Looking Glass, Trans. Co., 2 chicks
Panthertail, Trans. Co., (2)
Shortoff Mtn., Burke Co., (4)
Whiteside Mtn., Jackson Co., (3)

Pairs were present (but unsuccessful) at:

Big Lost Cove, Avery Co.
Blue Rock, Rutherford Co.
Grandfather Mtn., Avery Co.
Hanging Rock S.P., Stokes Co.
Pigeon River Gorge, Haywood Co. (new this year)
Whiterock, Madison Co.

That's all we know about. As always, if you discover a new nesting site,
please contact the Wildlife Resources Commission.
