See the note below forwarded from the CarolinaBird listserv. FYI, Winston-Salem is about a 3.5 - 4 hr drive from Knoxville on I-40 (a little over 250 miles). There is more information including directions in other postings which you should be able to find from http://www.birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CARO.html Dean Edwards Knoxville, TN ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Fri, 30 Jan 2009 19:29:26 -0500 From: John Haire To: Carolinabirds Forsythbirds Subject: Tufted Duck in W-S Hop Hopkins found an apparent Tufted Duck this afternoon at Archie Elledge Water Treatment Plant on Griffith Road in Winston-Salem. Other birders (David and Susan Disher, Rob Rogers, Gene Schepker and Lois Schneider, and I) also got to see the bird before closing time. The tuft is quite short, but is clearly visible. The sides are pure white. My recollection is that the back is pure black, although it does show gray shading in some of the photos. I think this may be an effect of the light and angle of the duck vs. the sun. Unlike this bird, the Tufted x Scaup hybrids I have found on Google seem to have a lot of vermiculation in the back showing the Scaup heritage. We are still doing our homework but I thought it would be good to get the word out. David's and my photos are posted at the links below. http://www.pbase.com/disherphotos/tufted_duck http://picasaweb.google.com/jhemail42/TuftedDuck?feat=directlink Good birding, John Haire Winston-Salem =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
