Three nestlings were present, about 5 to 6 days old. The nest was about 6 feet above ground in a spicebush shrub. The spicebush-dominated understory was tucked under a mature forest canopy consisting of black walnut, hickory, hackberry, and white ash. The spicebush berries are just beginning to turn red.
