Alas, I haven't been able to draw the turkeys out of the woods for several
years now, even with cracked corn. However, we have swarms of skunks and
raccoons (who all seem to have nudged out the possums) competing for seed and
suet as well as the bowl of kitty crunchies we sometimes forget to bring in
before dark. A couple of weeks ago my housemate remembered to retrieve the
crunchies, stepped to the front door, and found a skunk and a raccoon pressed
shoulder-to-shoulder at the bowl, hoovering up the contents.
A handful of Juncos are now routinely ground feeding at my place, as is a male
Rufous sided towhee and a White-throated sparrow.

And Sunday I heard a bird call I can only characterize as a desperate shriek
and turned to watch a Sharp-shinned hawk chase a small, loudly shrieking bird
fly 2 loops through a line of young pines not 30 feet from me. The chase then
went through another line of pines and the hawk missed its prey. Gorgeous bird,
spectacular sight.

Subject : FW: [TN-Bird] Turkey shares with squirrel

Yesterday we had an unusual confrontation. Having failed to put out the cracked
corn, the 20 Wild Turkey spent their time cleaning up beneath the other seed
feeders. There is a small tray feeder fixed to the deck rail (a 2x4) used a
great deal by our family of Fox Squirrels. As one was busy stuffing his face, a
Turkey hopped up onto the rail and stated to feed in front of him. The squirrel
turned its back, flattened the hair on its tail and went on eating. Now and
again the squirrel would back up a little, and the bird would flinch, but go on
eating. Eventually the Turkey was pecking seed from either side of the mammal.
Two other Turkeys arrived and watched the proceedings, looking as if they were
interested in joining in, but there was no room on ther rail. Another first for
the yard. Ralph and Kay Brinkhurst, Lebanon, Wilson Co.
