A thank you to Ron and Dolly Ann for the excellent directions. When we arrived we decided I would take the levee to the left and Sandy would walk on the right side and meet on the back. At about 1:20pm, we met on the back side of the levee (in about the middle) and decided to just sit for awhile and wait. Apparently the bird was right behind us in the water, got nervous and flushed. We had an excellent view as it flew about 250 feet into the tall grass to the North. Our thanks to the person who first found this wonderful bird - I believe it was Tom Howe! Also, we were unaware this Refuge existed and thankful to know it is there. By the way, we have seen American Bitterns before in Northern Michigan and also in Corkscrew Swamp in Florida, but never in Tennessee - a new Tennessee bird!
