Spent just under an hour at Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery in Anderson County late this morning. The place was jumping with Cliff and Tree Swallows.... more Cliff than Tree. Water is being added to most all of the ponds, including the top one that has been dry for a while. There was a lot of water on it but no birds. On the last pond in the back of the Hatchery I found 5 Blue Winged Teal (3 males, 2 females) and a M/F pair of Wood Ducks. Almost missed the Wood Ducks. I was scanning the teal when I noticed something in the tall grass of the bank behind them; it was the Wood Ducks. I saw no Great Blue Herons at the ponds and just one in a nest; all I could see of her was her bill. Six Double Crested Cormorants were perched on a branch below the herony and in the same group of trees as the heronry a Downy Woodpecker was frantically trying to drive away a Starling. A nearby tree had a woodpecker hole; perhaps the Downy's nest was in the hole. I checked the Cliff Swallow nests below the bridge across the river but saw no activity at the nests. I guess the swallows were all out to lunch at the hatchery.... there were Cliff Swallows at the field next to the boat ramp, but none seen at the nests.
