Nov. 30, 2010 MS. RV. TVA-Robco-Coro Lakes Shelby Co. TN On the Mississippi River, just as the snow flurries started, a single Peregrine Falcon sat on Dacus Bar looking pretty unhappy while 8 Ring-billed Gulls watched from the other end of the sand spit. For the past few winters, 1 or 2 Peregrines have patrolled this area of the waterfront. At TVA Lake, ducks kept tripping in and out of McKellar Lake and a coyote tipped along the edge of the water after scaring off 9 Ring-billed Gulls. The coyote would walk one way sniffing and looking and then the other way along the edge and a string of scaup followed his travels just a few feet off shore. A watched coyote is a good coyote. I got a couple of shots of this parade. The following waterfowl were counted; 518 Lesser Scaup, 88 Greater Scaup, 6 Hooded Merganser, 9 Canvasback, 8 Ruddy, 16 Shoveler, 9 Gadwall, 16 American Coots, 4 P-b Grebe and 9 Canada Geese. At Coro Lake, the immature Surf Scoter was feeding away from the Ring-necked, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, Canvasback, Ruddy Ducks, Shoveler and Gadwall present. Just across the road at Robco the duck numbers continue to grow but the weather got too bad to see much and I could see a break in the clouds just south in Mississippi. If you like shifting through gulls, the stars all lined up in Tunica Co. this afternoon, where acres and acres of gulls were spread out in the cut been fields and made for excellent views of SEVEN GULL SPECIES!!
