March 27th, 2016, Duck River Unit, TNWR Humphreys County.
Daniel Kinsinger, Alan Troyer, Victor Stoll, and myself spent a few hours
this afternoon at the DRU checking out the shorebirds before the rains
came.
Yellowlegs numbers were down slightly, but 5 Solitary Sandpipers was
nice.
Least and Pectoral Sandpiper numbers were up, with an amazing 775 Pecks
counted, with the vast majority out on the distant mudflats in the mouth of
the Duck River. (Victor and Alan took kayaks out to get the totals.)
Also out on the main mudflats were an even dozen American-golden Plovers,
and a newly arrived pair of Caspian Terns (FOS)
The biggest surprise was a pair of Black-necked Stilts in pool 2, briefly
seen and photographed from the wildlife drive during a shower, then not
found again after Victor and Alan came in.
