Steve, his parents JoAnne and Larry and I were off to the Duck River today for a bit of birding. Wow! How dry things are over there...highlights included a BROWN CREEPER, 6 BALD EAGLES, four species of sparrows including a SAVANNAH, 2 WHITE-CROWNED, SWAMP and SONG and a nice RED-SHOULDERED HAWK. We left there mid afternoon and headed for the Big Sandy Unit. There we saw 11 different species of ducks including rafts of 500+ MALLARDS and HOODED MERGANSERS. Other species of note included GOLDENEYE, LESSER SCAUP, and GREEN-WINGED TEAL to name a few of the 11 species seen. The treat of the day came on the road to Pace Point where we had 25 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS. At Bennett's Creek we had 5 BALD EAGLES that flew over head, half dozen Armadillos and a Bobcat...along with the MALLARDS, GADWALLS, N. SHOVLERS and N. PINTAILS. We pulled out of the Unit as darkness fell and all agreed it was a great day birding!
