On Saturday, May 2, six parties conducted the Cumberland County Spring Bird
Count and found 137 species. There were no real rarities, but Barbara
Stedman found a Swainson's Warbler upstream from Adams Bridge on Genesis
Road again this year. Steve Stedman found 11 Cerulean Warblers (the only
ones on the count) along the west side of Brady Mountain on Hinch Rd (Jewett
Rd). Several observers thought Red-headed Woodpeckers were especially
common. They were the second most common woodpecker, with 55 recorded,
compared to 68 Red-bellied Woodpeckers. The Whip-poor-wills were really
calling (despite no moon and cloudy conditions), with 64 recorded. In
contrast, only 4 Chuck-will's Widows were recorded; it's a rather uncommon
bird at our elevation of 1700-1900 feet. Early succession clearcuts with
pines are ideal habitat for Whip-poor-wills--I heard 27 and saw 4, but these
were limited to this habitat.

Complete results can be found on Stephen Stedman's bird website at

Other nearby counts as they occur and previous years' counts can also be
found at his website.
