Not sure why but the text from my previous msg did not come through. I took my nieces and their friend to "the Cove" at Concord Park (Knox Co.) to play in the beach area this afternoon from 4:15-6:30pm. Walking up to the beach I saw a brownish looking duck about 50 ft to the left of the small jetty and only about 25 ft from shore. I got closer and saw that it was a Red-Breasted Merganser. I ran back to my jeep and got my binos and camera. As I took photos it made its way around to the inlet next to the parking lot. I went back and forth checking on the girls and back to the inlet to watch and photogragh the bird. It was still there right before we left but as we drove off I couldn't see it. It was fairly cooperative and even tolerated kayakers putting out from the inlet. At one point it was about 10 ft from a guy sitting on the bank but every time I came over it went out a little. I'm not sure if it was a female or a male mostly out of breeding plumage(i'm leaning towards the latter). Other birds seen were Osprey, Belted Kingfisher, Great Blue Heron, UnIDed gulls, Brown-Headed Nuthatch(heard), Common Grackles, and trills were heard which were probably Pine Warbler. I've included some pics (see previous email) - any comments on the sex of the merganser would be welcome. =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
