Six common mergansers (three male and three female) were seen this morning by
Jean Alexander and Deb Campbell along the Little River. My wife and I just
returned, and we saw seven total in three separate locations. (My original
report of at least eight was incorrect. It was based on our seeing five males
and only two females. However, after looking at photos, one bird seen at a
great distance and believed to be a male was actually a female preening.)
Traveling upstream, we saw a single bird on a rock (the aforementioned preening
female) at a distance with three Canada geese 4.6 miles downstream from the
Townsend bridge. (It was where the river makes a sharp bend at the house on
the rock cliff.) We next saw two males and a female swimming at 2.7 miles
downstream from the Townsend bridge. (This was 0.1 miles upstream from where
there is a picnic area along Hwy. 321 can be seen.) The last groups consisted
of two males and a female at 1.7 miles downstream from the Townsend bridge.
They were sitting on a log on the far side of the river. We drove to Townsend
and turned around and retraced our route. (This is when we recorded the
mileage.) On the return route we only saw the three birds on the log at 1.7
miles. There are places on the river that are not visible from the road, which
probably accounts for not seeing the remaining birds.
