Yesterday morning July 25th around 9 a.m. Rick Shipkowski and I had an
immature Cave Swallow again over the upper end of pool 1 after hiking in.
This is the first time anyone tried again after I saw one there around the
same time on the 22nd.
This morning, July 26th, Graham Gerdaman, Alan Troyer, Jamin Beachy and
Victor Stoll hiked in again and got photos of two different birds, an adult
and a juvenile around 9 a.m. again at the same location.
These swallows have been very reliable over the past week. They may very
well do the exact same thing again tomorrow morning.
If you go you have to hike/bike 1.76 miles. Park along Refuge Road where
you first get to Grassy Lake and hike the Road (with a gate) that skirts
Grassy Lake and heads into the Refuge. Take the first Road to the right
(3/4 mile in) that goes North between pools 1 and 2. Go a quarter mile
North until you see the small closed sign on the left hand side of the
road. Two hundred feet before the sign you bushwhack into pool 1 on the
left. This section is a half mile and requires boots. You will know when
you get to the mudflats.
