In late Oct. an unfamiliar looking female / immature hummingbird visited the feeder of Kathy & Eric Noblet in Johnson City, TN (Carter Co. portion). Kathy obtained good photos, which were sent to Mark Armstrong, a certified hummingbird bander in Knoxville. He forwarded the photos to Bob Sargent, the hummer guru in Alabama. In the meantime, the bird vanished. Armstrong & Sargent agreed that the bird was clearly a Calliope. Characteristics included small size, short tail, relatively short bill, broad primary tips, & light cinnamon-buff coloration to flanks. This represents the first record in Northeast Tenn. and the fifth record in the state. The others were in Nashville (for 3 straight winters), Putnam Co, Hamilton Co, and Blount Co. Perhaps the coming cooler temperatures will force it back to the feeder. This should serve as a reminder to all to keep your hummingbird feeders out & under scrutiny.
