Sorry for the delayed post, but I have been computer-less most of this week (and had almost forgotten how pleasant that can be!).? The Buffalo River (Lawrenceburg) CBC was conducted on Dec. 27.? Eleven people in six parties found a near average 78 species.? No rarities, but a fly-by Merlin and a heard Lapland Longspur were nice finds.? No Barn Owls were located at the usual sites, but fresh pellets were found.? The Savannah CBC on December 29 was conducted by twelve people in six participants.? The species total was a new record for this count, with 115 species found (old record was 111).? Best birds were count first records for Surf Scoter, Laughing Gull?and Blue-headed Vireo.? Second count records for Forster's Tern and Common Yellowthroat are also noteworthy, though the former is becoming more regular in the area during winter months.? Other notable finds include Greater Scaup (13)?by three parties, nineteen Bald Eagles (second highest ever), Merlins (3) by two parties, 3 Virginia Rails and 1 Sora responding to tapes, 15 Woodcock, 5 Short-eared Owls by two parties, 2 Loggerhead Shrike by two parties, 2 Fish Crows (their always there, but seldom are vocal), 1 each House and Marsh Wren (the later also responding to a Va. Rail tape!), 2 Palm Warblers, only 4 Vesper Sparrows (30+ seen two days before the count), 6 LeConte's and 1 Lincoln's Sparrow, 3 Lapland Longspur.? Major misses (yeh, Reelfoot, we were within striking range!) included Green-winged Teal, American Wigeon (ducks can be tough on this count), Cooper's Hawk, Screech-Owl, and Red-breasted Nuthatch.
