This is an easy day-trip for anyone in East Tenn. It put on a very nice show this morning. Evidently it has been there for 2 weeks, but has generated little buzz on the internet. Directions: Interstate 81, exit 101 for Claytor Lake State Park. (This is near Radford.) Enter the park, head for the marina. The best viewing area is just to the left of the marina, at a gazebo behind the visitor center. The booby is usually seen flying by, sometimes very close, as it patrols the shoreline. It has been seen sitting on the water and, once, was seen perched in snags across the lake. This morning at about 9:00 it made 2 close passes, once within 50 ft., and made two plunges for fish. Much closer than the Dry Tortugas & back home for lunch.
