11/14/2010 Henry Co Paris Landing, Eagle Creek/Port Rd areas/Britton Ford I finally got out of the house today (fairly briefly), after being involved in an auto accident last weekend and still having a very sore lower back. Partly wanted to see how my back would do with some exercise (not as well as I had hoped....), partly wanted to see if I could find any of Jeffâ??s goodies from last weekend (not many), and partly to try out my new optics after replacing all of my old stuff that was destroyed in the accident. Luckily, none of my camera equipment was in the car at the time. Anyway, Paris Landing was very quiet, but at least the sign is gone from the island, which did have a few gulls on it. No groups of divers in the area at all that I could see though. Next was the mouth of Eagle Creek, at Bull Durham Rd. Highlight here were 7 Franklinâ??s Gulls resting amongst the Ring-bills, Herrings, and Forsterâ??s Terns. Best bird was out from Big Eagle Campground, out near where Eagle Creek hits the Big Sandy. There were around 100 loons in this area, with one Pacific amongst them. I had maybe 200 loons from the vantage points I had from Paris Landing to Trailer Rd. So, the usual ratio would say that if I had that many at mid-day, the late day roost would probably still hold 600-800 birds anyway. Heat waves were pretty bad today, but no sign of Jeffâ??s big boy, the young Yellow-billed. I saw nothing of note from either Trailer Rd or Port Rd. Britton Ford was pretty quiet, with a few Greater White-fronted Geese, and a handful of Snows and Blues. Lots of ducks in the big bay already, with most of the expected species accounted for, but nothing unusual. Only shorebirds were 18 Snipe and a single Dunlin. I had hoped to at least make it to the Big Sandy flats, but Britton Ford was about all that I had in me today. I posted a couple of distant and not very good shots of Franklinâ??s Gulls in my Fall 2010 gallery. I had posted a few shots since I last updated as well. New shots start at: http://www.pbase.com/mctodd/image/129554180/original , the first few of which are a very cooperative Black-throated Green Warbler. Good Birding!!
