TN-Birders:

Forgive my scientific reference, but it had a nice ring to it. Bombycillidea
is the family to which Cedar Waxwings belong, and at Greenway Farms this
morning I was inundated with them. I banded 53 in all; 26 of them in 1 net
(a new single net record)! Those waxwings also helped set a record for most
birds banded in a singe day out there (72), and pushed the total number of
birds I have banded at Greenway Farms over 1,500 (1,534) and the total
number of birds I have banded in the Chattanooga area over 2,000 (2,052)

Another interesting waxwing observation was that some of the birds had
orange tips to their tail feathers instead of the typical yellow coloration;
something I had not seen before. As it turns out, that comes from eating
berries of the introduced Japanese honeysuckle. If they eat those berries
while the tail feathers are growing, the tips become orange, not yellow. You
learn something new everyday!
