Birding was most interesting this am at Ensley. The 4 immature White Ibis were
still present plus all the common herons in the two remaining ponds with
adequate water along Riverport Rd. Just after Jeff drove by, an Osprey soared
over the second pond. The 75+ Great Egrets ignored it along with the immature
Little Blues, Snowies, Green, Great Blues and one Cattle Egret. A pair of
Black-bellied Whistling Ducks , 12 Wood Ducks, 10 Mallards, one Lesser
Yellowlegs, 2 Black-necked Stilts, a scattering of peeps - too far to identify,
and 6 Killdeer were also on the pond edges. Six Least Terns flew by. At the
Pits proper were 2 families of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks each with at
least 8 newly hatched young. These black and white hatchlings are worth a trip
because of their startling plumage. Was able to pick up a Spotted Sandpiper, a
Solitary Sandpiper, a Short-billed Dowitcher, 12+ Black-necked Stilts, 2
Semipalmated Plovers, 30+ Semipalmated Sandpipers, many Leasts in all sorts of
plumages and 100 + Pecs. I couldn't stay long enough to take a more precise
count, but it was a great morning. Can't wait to get back when I have more
time. Only hope it turns cooler.
