Cherokee Lake, by canoe
6/2/08, 5:30-8:00 PM

We launched from the Kidwell Boat Ramp, near Panther Creek Park, and
headed northwest about 1 mile to Bird Island (marked by "12" signs
on the east and north sides).
The number of D-C cormorant and great blue heron nests has soared
since last year, while B-C night-heron nests held steady. We spotted
3 great egret nests (adults on nests, no fledglings observed). They
were in dense foliage at midlevel in the trees; we got our best view
by looking across from the opposite side of the island. Last year,
none were seen; in 2006, we recorded 4 GE nests.

The cormorants nest along the perimeter of the island, on the south
and east sides. The herons nest throughout the island, with the
night-herons locating in the midstory, and the great blues higher in
the canopy. We stayed along the shoreline and couldn't completely
survey the nests in the middle of the island. There was considerable
noise and movement there, so the nests of both heron species were
surely undercounted.

The cormorant and great blue nests were occupied by large young, the
night-heron nests had a range of ages or brooding adults only. Some
night-herons were seen carrying nesting material

Partial list:
Double-cr. cormorant (450+, 142 nests)
Great blue heron (250+, 78 nests)
Great egret (14, 3 nests)
Black-crowned night-heron (ca. 125, 33 nests)
Ring-billed gull (12)
Tree swallow (3)
Yellow-billed cuckoo (2)
