Bells Bend, Old Hickory Blvd
Davidson Co., TN
Monday 2012 Aug. 27

This Monday morning Phillip Casteel and I birded the sod farm
on Old Hickory Blvd. for over 60 minutes, looking for shorebirds
in general and specifically BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERs that
Scott Block discovered there over the weekend. Although we
scanned the sod farm for over an hour, we missed the Buffies
and had to be content with 3 SOLITARY and 12 LEAST SANDPIPERs
plus 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERs and a single WILSON'S SNIPE that
were in the small puddles in a field on the opposite side of
the road from the sod farm.

I returned at 4 pm in the afternoon to check again, but initially
I saw only a large group of KILLDEER. After scanning for a couple
minutes I suddenly noticed 5 birds flying in from the back of the
sod field. The BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERs had arrived. They only
stayed for perhaps 10-15 minutes and I missed seeing where they
flew off to. Perhaps they went to the distant tilled dirt area
in the sod fields.
