Hello Birders.

Right around 4 P.M. today, a ruby-throated hummingbird flew across my deck
here in the Charlotte Park section of West Nashville, Davidson County. She
did not stop at my feeder as she "barreled" west toward the Cumberland
River.

Just before dark, I heard two barred owls "fire up" nearby. I stepped out
on my deck and saw one in a near-leafless tree about a block away. When
the other one answered, it was in a tree in my back yard. It was such a
thrill. It's been about 15 years since I had a barred in my yard. The great
horneds come up from the Cumberland now and then to "mouse" on my deck as
does a little screech owl.

By the way, a chipmunk has been greedily stashing bird seed for the
winter. It has been making countless trips to the feed on the deck floor,
filling its cheeks with food and scurrying off to its cache, then returning
almost as fast as it went. It has been doing this from dawn to dusk for over
a
week. From the way it is "hoarding," I think we may be in for a ROUGH
winter. Freeze warnings are out for Nashville tonight according to WSMV
weather reports. I managed to get my peace lillies inside!
