I was sitting outside in my yard (Lynchburg) today enjoying a late lunch (around 2 pm) when a Baltimore Oriole flew in to examine the coral honeysuckle. Another new yard bird for me--that makes 3 additions in the past 7 days (Orchard Oriole, RB Grosbeak, Baltimore Oriole)! If I'd stuck to my usual schedule, I would have missed this beautiful sight. The yard is a-flutter (sorry) with bird activity. We've got at least two dozen Goldfinches, nine RB Grosbeaks, three Eurasian Collared-doves, and a very vocal pair of Mockingbirds. I counted 31 species seen or heard from the yard today, which I think is pretty good considering that we're right in town (admittedly, not a very big town!) and lack any real wooded area or other prime bird habitat. My list today: Black Vulture Turkey Vulture Eurasian Collared-dove Mourning Dove Chimney Swift Ruby-throated Hummingbird Red-bellied Woodpecker Downy Woodpecker N. Flicker Blue Jay American Crow Purple Martin Carolina Chickadee Tufted Titmouse White-breasted Nuthatch Carolina Wren American Robin Northern Mockingbird Brown Thrasher European Starling Chipping Sparrow Song Sparrow Northern Cardinal Rose-breasted Grosbeak Red-winged Blackbird Common Grackle Orchard Oriole Baltimore Oriole House Finch Am. Goldfinch House Sparrow Doesn't spring just make you glad to be alive?
