The answer to the query I have posted a few times: yes, Bachman's Sparrows are still extant in clearcuts in the southwestern Highland Rim in middle TN. Damien Simbeck (in the lead) and I looked in several recent clearcuts in northeastern Wayne County this morning (7/17/2010) using extensive song playback. We saw two individual Bachman's Sparrows (one each in two different clearcuts), but heard no songs from the species. It was a quiet morning for bird song in general, as is typical for mid- July in this region. The spots we covered were in the general area between Waynesboro and the Natchez Trace Parkway. Also, on the way home, I added another species to my list of likely Lewis County breeders -- a Song Sparrow singing at the corner of First and Oak in Hohenwald. My first summer record for the species in the county, I have been long wondering when one would turn up.
