Since Jay Desgrosellier and I both have had a bad case of cabin fever for a while, we decided to take account of the gorgeous weather today (April 5) to spend a few hours doing some leisurely birding at one of our favorite places, the Duck River Unit of the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge near New Johnsonville, TN. We spent about 6 hours there (0730 to 1330) and tallied 88 species with minimal effort, including the following highlights: 1 AMERICAN AVOCET - one in breeding plumage feeding frenetically along the back edge of Pool 3 12 American Golden-Plovers 100 each of Greater & Lesser Yellowlegs 16 species of ducks & geese including: 1500 Blue-winged Teal 750 Green-winged Teal 3 American Black Ducks 200 Mallards 35 Wood Ducks 20 Northern Pintails 225 Northern Shovelers 150 Gadwall 15 American Wigeon 35 Greater Scaup (best looks we've ever had at wing stripe on flying birds!) 15 Lesser Scaup 40 Bufflehead 40 Hooded Mergansers 20 Red-breasted Mergansers 9 Ruddy Ducks 1 Broad-winged Hawk all the regular swallows except Bank 35 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers 1 American Pipit 1 White-eyed Vireo 2 Warbling Vireos 5 warblers including 2 Prothonotary and 1 Common Yellowthroat For a leisurely half-day of birding, you won't hear any complaints from us.
