President's Island
Ensley Bottoms
Shelby Co. TN

Well,7/11 was a lucky combination today, I had to wait on some tops to be
manufactured and had a few hours to spend down town. Traveling out the causeway

to President's Island I noted a distant bird coming off the river with a
funny wing beat. I sped up and drove under an adult female Anhinga. The bird
circled out over McKeller Lake, gained altitude and went south.

The hybrid female Scissor-tail/Western was seen feeding 4 young and again
this year she is not getting any help from the pure bred male Scissor-tail.
That
make two years in a row that the scallywag has left her with all the duties.
This is her fourth year raising a brood on the Island. The pair of
Scissor-tails are feeding at least 3 young over in the woods to the north.

At the "Pits" in Ensley, the male B-b Whistling Duck was found in a new
location but without the female. Gail King and I watched as it flew back to the

marsh to feed in the exact location the pair has used twice in the last month.
The bird was reported to have returned to the first pond that it was
photographed in this morning sometime afternoon by Jay Walko. I would not bet
against the female being somewhere close on a nest but that might be just
wishful
thinking.
