During the Knox County Spring Bird Count, Mike Nelson and I found an AMERICAN BITTERN in Knoxville. We quit the count early so that I could get home and send this report, hoping that someone might be able to get out and re-find this bird. Location: SEQUOYAH HILLS PARK off Cherokee Boulevard. Go to the westernmost parking area, which is 2-3 blocks east of Scenic Drive. Park and walk in, with the river on your right. If you walk in about the middle of the field (half way between the river and the backyards of the homes to your left), you will soon come to a low area with standing water. The water goes into an area that is like an 'island of trees'. If you walk into the grassy vegetation as you approach the 'island', you can find a spot where you can look into the inside, following the water. The bittern was seen in here. If you see a group of tall, yellow irises, you'll know you're in the right area. Certainly it may move elsewhere, but I hope these directions will give someone a chance to see this really rare bird for Knoxville. Good luck!
