TN-birders, My wife and I saw an American Bittern (for the thrid sighting in the last 10 days) at White's Mill Wildlife Refuge yesterday afternoon. This is a TWRA managed refuge (go to their web site for more details and directions) in eastern Blount Co. The refuge is actually on White's Mill Road, and by compass, it is due south of the Lambert Acres golf course, probably about a mile. If you go out of Maryville towards the Smokies, eventually you will see the large sign for Lambert Acres Golf Course on the right. Turn right and in a short while there will be Lee Lambert road going off to the left. Take this road left and go past the south side of the golf course. The next road to the left (you can only go left at this intersection) will be White's Mill Road. Go left about 3/4 mile and you will see the refuge sign on your left. There is a good place to park your vehicle there and the walking is on the dikes of the refuge. The walking is easy, but there are some blackberry brambles with thorns. We just walked out the dike that goes left, but if you don't find it there, keep walking around all the dikes and hope you find it. It took us 2 tries before we saw it. Great birding.
