[TN-Bird] ADVISORY: Junk mail to TN-Birds

TN-Birders:
I am sure many subscribers noticed the junk mail that came to you regarding a
deadline to sign up for a "green card."

It had to happen eventually.

TN-Birds probably averages well over a hundred span messages addressed to the
list each month. The security provision of TN-Birds has been highly successful
at catching spam and deleting it from the list before it is sent to
subscribers.

I am sent a report on every such attempt. The security provision is automated.
The reports I receive as moderator look something like this:

Request received for list 'tn-bird' via request address.
>> Treasure Chest Sweepstakes Lottery
Unknown command.
>> An Affiliate of the GREEK NATIONAL LOTTERY
Unknown command.
>> Kifisou 62 Av. GR-121 32 Peristeri,
Unknown command.

Today's spam message came from the address gtte@xxxxxxxxxxx which subscribed to
TN-Birds on Sept. 17, 2004 at 3:48 p.m. I saw it come in and it looked like a
harmless subscriber. Suspicious addresses are usually checked out or quickly
blocked. The
gtte@xxxxxxxxxxx address has been blocked and locked. I hope that is the end
of such problems for the near future.

I regret that one got past the system. It won't be the last time.
You should take comfort in knowing that messages handled by the TN-Birds
listserv are scaned with virus protection software. So this means all
precautions are taken.

Let's go birding...
