Nov. 28, 2004 Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge Haywood Co. TN Evidently the immature, male Vermilion Flycatcher, that I found at Oneal Lake last February, has returned in glorious adult colors. Late this afternoon, on my way home from the Paris Landing-Britton Ford area, I stopped in at the refuge just off I-40 near Brownsville. As I drove around the lake, across from the new headquarters building, way out in front of my truck, I noticed a small bird flush from the short trees lining the road edge. The bird flew out to the stand of live Cypress Trees in the lake. I recognized the flight and landing as that of a flycatcher and thought it was going to be a Phoebe but it did appear small. In the dimming light, I could not see any color but drove closer and then got an almost overdose of color in my bins. The bird is absolutely gorgeous. It flew back to the roadside a couple of times but a continuous parade of cars kept it flying back to the middle of the lake. I lost the bird at 4:20, I would think it might stay around for a little while. It will be interesting to see if the Reelfoot Vermilion also returns. Heads Up! Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
