Feb. 17, 2008
Tunica Co, MS

This morning, I discovered one of the Rough-legged Hawks had been shot and
killed, evidently just shortly before I arrived at its favorite field. I had
missed the bird on Saturday but just thought it had headed back north as the
other two I had been keeping tabs on. Both had left the previous week from
their field about a mile away but this bird had stayed. I had taken a few
photos
of an immature Krider's at this field Saturday and returned this AM to try
for a few more photos.

I noticed some feathers blowing up in the wind about 150 yards out in the
rice stubble. As I approached, my heart sunk, even at a distance, I recognized
it was the Rough-legged. I can't explain the deep loss I felt and then such a
rush of anger. A wondrous creature lay wasted; it had brought many birders
great joy, as we watched it at work, hunting and kiting over the rice stubble.

I took the bird to the Mississippi Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at Lake
Cormorant, to be transferred to a proper agency for use as a skin. I've posted
photos at the site below. The pictures are saddening, yet still a tribute to
the majesty and beauty of this great bird that we had marveled at, alive and
wild.
