I visited 7 Islands Wildlife Refuge after work today from 4:30 - 5:45 pm. The few sparrow IDs were hard w/ the failing light and my poor skills but I saw my 1st definite FOX SPARROW along the hedgerow leading to the river. Also along here I looked up to see an enormous flock (300-400+) RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS flying NW. Heading back to the road I spotted first-of-season male and female NORTHERN HARRIER. I lost them but as I looked back toward the river there were 5 Harriers together silloueted against an orange sunset--really nice!! Two were male and two female-not sure about the fifth. I've never seen more than one at a time. As I walked south down the road one of the females flew right over headed west as if to check me out. A couple of RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS and 13 CANADA GEESE in v-formation were about the only other birds of interest seen. Around 11-13 deer were seen, w/ 3 crossing the river towards Steamboat Island. No ducks, but I did find 9 Gadwall here on 11/9. Shane Williams - Knoxville,TN _____________________________________________________________ Netscape.
