Walked around 7 Islands refuge in east Knox County this past Saturday for 4 hours beginning 9:40 a.m. Shortly after taking the River Trail from the paved road I flushed a covey of quail - 10 to 12 Bobwhites which showed me their backs as they took off and came down again farther into the tall grass. An adult Bald Eagle cruised by a little later stirring up the crows. I didn't find many warblers but did have a Magnolia on the Steamboat Island Trail, a Yellow Rumped and at least 3 Palm Warblers near the last barn. In my back yard in West Knox County Sunday an American Goldfinch was still feeding a begging youngster and I had my first visit this fall from a Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker, making it the most exciting day in the yard in quite a while as I have been bereft of migrants this season.
