Sept. 25, Cumberland Co. TN

Last Thursday coming out of Grassy Cove I stopped where the Cumberland Trail
crosses Hwy. 68. I noticed a lot of bird activity in a blackgum tree (black
tupelo, Nyssa sylvatica). Birds were feeding on the blue berries, the
blackgum fruit. Present were SWAINSON'S, GRAY-CHEEKED, WOOD THRUSH, and VEERY
and
more than one of each. As they rotated about the tree it was like a flash-card
review of our migrant thrushes (except Hermit, a little early, not sure there
will be any left for them, and no Am. Robins present). Also a Pileated
Woodpecker flew from the tree when I arrived. The leaves are turning red on
the
blackgums already, so they are pretty easy to pick out from a distance. I'll
be
checking them out for more of that kind of activity.
