When Howard Langridge broke the five-county Northeast Tennessee single year species record in 2000, he came up with 237 species seen in Carter, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington counties. It was possible because birders throughout the region watched for good birds and called him every time there was something he could add to his list. He always showed up to get the bird. Rick Knight pointed out that 2000 was an exceptional year for rare birds in Northeast Tennessee. That helped build the final total. So, in a sense, it was sort of a team effort by many birders in the region and not just one person. Langridge broke the old record of 231 which had been set 11 years prior by Brian Cross in 1989. That was an individual record and not a team approach for the five counties. By June 2000, Langridge had made a significant start at 213 species for five counties in a six-month period. It took him the rest of the year to get 24 more species. At first brush, it seems like getting 200 species in just one of those five counties might be a tall order. But I don't really know. Let's go birding......
