Agreed, Steve, There are definitely some environments where an appliance-like device is definitely a good fit, I just do not believe that it is for most businesses -- today -- and not for everyone in the company all of the time (e.g. CAD users, graphic artists/marketing, etc. where an XPE/NTe solution would fit well -- even through SBC). In five years, I think that this will change dramatically and a CE-like OS (Blackcomb or next generation) will be the OS to have. But most businesses are not quite ready to go fully thin yet and this is really where the benefits come into play. I think that the overwhelming majority of business managers out there could be convinced of the fiscal benefits of SBC, but the reality is that most of them think of an entire infrastructure change as being too drastic and risky today, but doing it over time and with baby steps is the right way to go for them and they look like heroes instead of risk-takers. Giving these business managers the ability to have a mixed environment that can transition over to a full-blown SBC environment will ease their minds a little bit and make them a little more apt to go .NET/New Moon/Citrix all the way in say five years... My belief is that is where MS is going right now by introducing the stuff that is coming with .NET John Vorchak Vorchak Software Custom Windows XP Embedded and Windows NT Embedded Components and Solutions jvorchak@xxxxxxxx -----Original Message----- From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Stephen Greenberg Sent: Tuesday, September 17, 2002 8:09 PM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: was Wyse Rapport I have the utmost respect for both Jim and John but I do want to point out that while an embedded NT/XP solution is a great fit for some environments you might be overstating it a bit! My point is this- the more you stuff into the desktop device the less you are doing Server Based Computing. While Altiris might be a very elegant tool for managing these devices, you are still running and maintaining applications locally. Before you dismiss CE based devices keep in mind that all you ever have to do to them is set them up and perhaps make some small changes over the life cycle of the device. The CE based managment software that is out there is great and does this easily, Rapport is not a fair comparison to these tools! Regards, Steve Greenberg Thin Client Computing 34522 N. As the Internet becomes more and more invasive into business, a real browser is necessary, something that CE does not deliver. Also, some folks have a need for applications that do not work well on server-based computing (e.g. Terminal Emulators that you already have licenses that are bought and paid for and won't work on CE...), some have a need for fast full color through direct client-server, some have a need custom applications at the local level, some folks have to have peripherals or PCI cards, some folks simply want to be able to migrate their systems whenever needed to whatever they need (NTe -> XPE, NTe -> Windows 2000, etc.) CE does not deliver the full functionality of the Win-32 API and therefore cannot run all applications, support all standard peripherals, bring just about any print driver down, etc. CE is also much less secure than NT Embedded or XP Embedded on many different levels. Although some (the dominant CE vendors, e.g. Wyse) will have you believe that CE is more secure because you don't have the same access abilities that you ~can~ with NT/XP, it is much less secure and not included in many sensitive installations due to that fact alone. NT/XP can be locked down so much if the situation calls for it that it can be even more limiting than CE, just ask any other of the profile/policy junkies like me that are on this list. CE does work very well for some things, don't get me wrong, but controlling a Coke machine is not the same as a desktop computer OS... As far as the Altiris product, NetX is delivering Deployment Solution 5.5 with their products last I heard and they are the same products as Altiris sells direct or through VARs. p.s. - as Jim would let you know, yes I am always this long winded... ;-) Good luck, John Vorchak Vorchak Software Custom Windows XP Embedded and Windows NT Embedded Components and Solutions jvorchak@xxxxxxxx -----Original Message----- From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Rosemary Sarkis Sent: Tuesday, September 17, 2002 6:33 PM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: Wyse Rapport Jim Netx seems to be limiting in the amount of models - ie I couldn't see a CE version which was what we were looking at. We basically wish to have a local browser + 3270 emulator running on CE. Is it possible or recommended to get the best of both worlds, ie use a Wyse terminal (for the range they have) but use Altiris to manage the unit?? What do you think?
