You are correct Joe. many times a hybrid solution is the best solution but
people tend to thing of things in black and white and never look at that.

Well, Ghost and script each have their advantages.. If you have a contest for the most number of servers then Ghosting will win as that is one of the strengths of imaging… However, with scripting you generally have increased flexibility. Try maintaining images for a large, evolving farm with many silos and you'll see what I mean.

Also, no one ever said you couldn't use a combination of imaging and
scripting as well. Either as base image + scripts or using scripts to
create an image.

I've found that it's quicker to create a Ghost image without Citrix
installed, and sysprep it before capturing the image and create the
sysprep.inf file to automate the entire startup. Then you can script the
install of Citrix so all you do is load the image on the server and sysprep
handles name/SID issues and then you launch the scripted Citrix install and
you're set. You can do it with almost zero interaction once you launch the
ghost process.

On that note, maybe at a future BriForum or something there should be a
contest to see who can bring the most new servers on-line the quickest. It
could be a shoot-out between the scripted install folks and the imaging
folks with the prize of eternal fame.

Hi

I need to build a new server to add to my Citrix farm. I dont want to
manually build this. I have a ghost image of an existing system that I
want
to use for a new server. All hardware is the same. The Ghost image
contains:

Windows 2000 Std SP4
Metaframe XP 1.0
Server is in domain
Server is in Citrix farm
Lots of apps

Image is not SYSPREPed. Its a straight Ghost. Applications are not name
specific.

Do I simply do the following to get this new server up and running:
- remove server from domain
- rename server to new name
- Change SID
- change IP

Do I need to uninstall/reinstall Metaframe? Will this server be reliable?

Ive seen documents that explain how to create a ghost SYSPREP image but
not
a document for me scenario (ie existing std ghost image)

Thanks
