I can help if you provide more info:

What SUS settings are being applied through Group Policy? List those.
What OS/service pack level are the clients at?
Any errors listed in winlogon.log?
Check your IIS logs on the SUS server for errors. If there are any, list
some of those.

I can't help you -- exactly --, but our WUS settings show up like this (W2K
Pro,
no AD) so maybe SUS is close to this??

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
"WUServer"="http://wus.companyname.com";
"WUStatusServer"="http://wus.companyname.com";
"ElevateNonAdmins"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
"NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers"=dword:00000001
"NoAutoUpdate"=dword:00000000
"AUOptions"=dword:00000004
"ScheduledInstallDay"=dword:00000000
"ScheduledInstallTime"=dword:00000006
"UseWUServer"=dword:00000001
"RescheduleWaitTimeEnabled"=dword:00000001
"RescheduleWaitTime"=dword:0000000a
"DetectionFrequencyEnabled"=dword:00000001
"DetectionFrequency"=dword:00000002
"AutoInstallMinorUpdates"=dword:00000001
