Hi Evan, Under some circumstances, the Software hive in the registry can get very big (over 70 MB). We support a lot of sites but have only had this happen on one of them. The fix? Two things. Tracked the bloat down to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Terminal Server\Install\Machine. Deleted the contents of this key and set it to read/only for evrything. That stopped the hive getting any bigger, but it was still too big. Like a lot of databases, deleting records (keys etc) leaves holes in the database but doesn't reduce it's size. There are a number of ways of compacting the registry, including using regback but the only thing that looked halfways attractive was regcompact. Got a copy of regcompact 1.0 (Author - Daniel Werner) and ran that on one of the affected servers with fingers crossed (after backing up the registry with regback). All it needed was a couple of reboots. It worked. We subsequently did the rest of the farm. Cut the Software hive down from 78 MB to 26 MB. That gave us 50 MB of extra registry space which was more than enough. regards, Rick Ulrich Mack Volante Systems Level 2, 30 Little Cribb Street Coronation Drive Office Park Milton Qld 4064 tel: +61 7 32431847 fax: +61 7 32431992 rmack@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ________________________________ From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx on behalf of Evan Mann Sent: Sat 22/01/2005 4:29 AM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: Registry size causing issues HELP!! NTUSER.DATs range from 280k to 580k. Most are in the 400k range. I've about 100 users with created profiles, so that's around 50 megs there. Not all 100 are logged in at a time though. Average around 30. "Default" reigstry file is almost 70 megs "software" is 29 megs "system" is 8 megs Anything sound outrageous about any of this? _____________________________________________ From: Evan Mann Sent: Friday, January 21, 2005 1:16 PM To: 'thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: Registry size causing issues HELP!! I'm having problems with my registry size on a 2000 TS. The registry after a reboot was 110 megs and within a few hours of users being on it grew to 119. The max size is set to 150. It seems to be causing random inabilities to get to some shared folders on the terminal server or even browse to c$ I am running UPHClean and they are all local profiles. What can I do to knock this size down ASAP. It's effecting business. ##################################################################################### This e-mail, including all attachments, may be confidential or privileged.
