We use ThinPrint to do exactly what you are looking for. Thee is a free
trial at www.thinprint.com. We've used it for years without too much
problems. We haven't tried it over a VPN (we use it for satellite
links)but I'm sure you'll see some improvement.

Subject: [THIN] Printing over WAN

Maybe someone has asked this question and I did not see it. Is anyone
using a compression utility when printing over a WAN?

We currently are experiencing PAINFULLY slow printing from a print queue
in the USA to Australia. This is over a VPN at T1/E1 speeds. We have
tried printing directly to the printers and are now setup to send print
jobs to a LPD on an NT4 server in Melbourne which then sends data to the
printers. The problem is the print job sizes during the transfer from
the US to Australia. When the job actually reaches the server in
Australia, printing happens very quickly. But, until the job is
finished copying there can be up to a 2 min wait for a 900k print file.

I am looking for a print data compression program that can compress on
this side and uncompress on the other. Any assistance would be GREATLY
appreciated.

Thanks,
