[THIN] Off Topic IE freezes

here is the problem "ie freezes clicking back button"
 
This is on W2k3 server/IE6 sp1.
 
We have a default home web page.  We enter another url jump around there and
go to some other webs.  Open a word document from a link on one of the web
pages. It opens in another ie browser.
 
Close the word document.  click back back back.... until just before the
original home page.  Click back again and it just sits there.  No other
hidden windows that I can find.  Task Manager says it is still running not
the expected "not responding".  Only solution is to kill IE.
 
I think these web pages all use some sort of security to get to them?
