We just setup a new APC rack that has a nice cooling system in it.
Basically it's a big filtered blower that mounts in the bottom 2U and
has a "boot" that velcros to the floor panel and liturally sucks the
cold air out of from under the floor and blows it up the front side of
the rack. So far we only have 3 blade centers in the rack, but they all
stay nice and cool, even with the mufflers on the back of them.

The newest IBM's support two SCSI drives (on board hardware raid
controller) and a Fiber Channel daughter card on each blade , you can
still have 14 blades in the chassis........

Looks like Blades have arrived !!

(now we just need to be able to get enough power and cooling to the
racks)

The hotswap SCSI drives in each blade is a nice touch. With IBM you go
from
14 blades to 7 blades per chassis if you want SCSI drives. You also
lose
one of the ATA drives if you want a Fiber Channel card. But I think the
IBM
BladeCenter does have it's benefits also. I don't see a media tray on
the
Dell?? Am I missing it? IBM has a single CD and Floppy that can be
switched to each blade by either a button on the front or a click in a
web
browser.

The new CISCO switch in the IBM is real nice, our networking guys
wouldn't
have it any other way, it integrates great (Trunking, VLANS,
Fail-Over)into
our CISCO 6500 infastracture switches. I'm sure Dell also uses the
Qlogic
2312, so both would work nice with the FastT 700 and 900, although I
like
the setup of IBM's Optical Pass-Thru a little better.

With our config, booting from the SAN and using the little on-board ATA
drive for temp and swap the higher density of the IBM was the way to go
and
so far we've been very happy with it.

Just my 2 cents.

They look good so far. We have been doing our own research with
IBM/HP/Dell
on this subject. Dell looks better than I expected. Nacona processors,
how
lots of ram, 800MHz FSB, and they pulled of true hot swap, redundant
scsi
drives per blade. Once they offer the Cisco switch and the Brocade SAN
switch early next year (at least on the Brocade
front) they will look even better to me. Not sure if I could convince
out
Network team to bring the PowerConnect switch in to play.

Dell have launched some new blades today (apparently) - look much better
than their last P3 set! The nice EM64T Xeons - the ones with 64bitness
:)
