The solutions seems a little drastic for a 3 server farm. One DC can = support 100 or so servers. DCs are not load balanced, however you have = have multiple DCs running (one for each zone) but for 3 servers it's too = much work. My guessimate is your problems lies in a few different areas: Network settings are not hard-coded on both the switch and NIC for = speed and duplex Profiles are too large, thus a slow logon. Exclude Temp files from = roaming profiles and redirect the My Documents directory The Servers need to be tuned and optimized (too many to list here) The SQL app needs to be tuned and optimized. Many applications are = written by amatures, thus they feel the need to make a SQL call for each = field they need instead of one SQL call for all the fields in that = table. You may only get 2-3 users on a server. Sometime developers = will load the screens up with graphics etc.. Switching to a lower color = depth can product a notice performance increase. -----Original Message----- From: sksippy [mailto:sksippy@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Saturday, April 12, 2003 3:45 AM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Need some help with W2K+Citrix XPe/FR2 farm redeisgn Importance: High Hello, Hope that this excellent resource can help with my current redesign =3D problem. Current System: 1 PDC, RAID5 with 1 redundant drive (also used as data store), 3xMFXPe/FR2 application servers (Access based IMA), 130 =3D terminals (all PC - 80% 100Mbps, 20% 10Mbps), 1xAxis CD-ROM Server, broadband =3D internet access PDC also executes MS SQL Data Engine based server app. All Citrix =3D servers 1Gb RAM, RAID 1, DC is 512MB. Each server has a single 3com 3c980 at =3D full duplex 100Mbps. 30 users with roaming profiles. Rest use roaming mandatory profiles. Do = =3D not delete cached copies of profiles as think this will add to current =3D problems. Current problems: Slow logon, slow response on SQL application =3D (generally no more than 2 users) - overall network performance approx 50% less than previous NT4/TSE (main difference there was no SQL app on the NT/TSE system), but degradation particularly noticeable at logon time when say = =3D 30 users are already logged in and 30 users are attempting to log on simultaneously, balance login and logoff during rest of school day-50% = =3D users have IE6 browser open, most use MS Office, 20% use other educational =3D apps. Proposed Solution:=3D20 Current thoughts: 1. Add secondary DC - Does authentication process get 'balanced' between = =3D DCs or do we need to introduce Microsoft Network Load balancing (NLB) to =3D achieve this? Any advice if introducing a secondary DC will reduce logon time? 2. Move User data to SAN device or another W2K server? - cost difference very pertinent as site is primary school in England - very low budgets. 3. Also should template profile source - maximum 3 types - also reside = =3D on a separate W2K server? 4. Move SQL MSDE to another W2K server - this will definitely help =3D reduce the load on the current primary DC/data store - so going to do this =3D anyway. Your suggestions: Would be a great help if this was given some thought and welcome any suggestions. Thanks team!
