CTX110870 - Users Experience Slow Logons if the Home Drive Configured for a User is Located Across a Slow WAN Link This document was published at: http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX110870 Document ID: CTX110870, Created on: Aug 23, 2006, Updated: Aug 24, 2006 Products: Citrix MetaFrame XP 1.0 for Microsoft Windows 2003 Symptoms Users may experience slow logons if the home drive configured for a user is located across a slow wide-area network (WAN) link. Cause Due to the order in which Windows searches for files, unnecessary queries may be made to the user's home drive. Increased logon times occur if this drive is accessed across a slow WAN link. Running FileMon during the logon process indicates the processes and files which are being searched for on the home drive. The operating system searches for files in the following order: The directory from which the application loaded. The current directory (home drive). The system directory. The 16-bit system directory. The Windows directory. The directories that are listed in the PATH environment variable. For more details, see Programs start slowly or slow logon if the network connection to your home folder is slow. In MetaFrame XP Feature Release 3 and earlier, Wfshell is located in the \windows\system32\ folder in Windows Server 2003 (\winnt\system32\ in Windows 2000 Server), while some of its helper files are located in the \program files\citrix\system32 folder. When Wfshell loads and tries to load its helper files, queries are made across the WAN link to the home drive due to the operating system search order. Workaround The best logon times can be achieved by improving network performance between the MetaFrame server and the server hosting the users' home drive. If this is not a possible, improvements can be achieved by doing the following: ? Installing CTX110130 ? Hotfix XE104R02W2K3018 - For MetaFrame XP 1.0 for Windows Server 2003, which places Wfshell in the same directory as its helper files (\program files\citrix\system32) eliminating any unnecessary queries to the home drive made by Wfshell. ? Excluding certain processes from Citrix API hooks. See CTX107825 ? Disabling Citrix API Hooks on a Per Application Basis.
