The beep() function was covered recently by Larry Osterman:

Which got me thinking when I saw this thread, that perhaps TS doesn't
bring the sound to the machine because the beep isn't like other
sounds.  It isn't generated by the sound card, and presumably doesn't
go anywhere near the sound card driver.  It's a function of the "Intel
8254 as a very primitive square wave generator".
