I backup everything with NTBACKUP here and have never had a problem.

Why not use the CA products to backup the SystemState on a DC?  Why would
you even want to use NTBACKUP?  You could use NTBACKUP, but that's just
another layer you will need to manage.

There are several backup-products that can do so. But with NTbackup the
command-line is 
        ntbackup backup systemstate ...

You can use many of the options that are described in the Help-file of
NTbackup. They're listed in Concepts > Using backup > Command line
parameters
