Special Smiles
My friend Avi brought his special needs yeshiva by for a rooftop talk.
He brings them once or twice a year. It’s my opportunity to pick up a bunch
of Jewish boys who might think they have a very good reason to be down.
But, as usual, they weren’t down. For the most part they are very
happy with life. They did ask why Hashem makes it so difficult for some
people, so much more than others.
I told them, “You do not have the most difficult problems. Everyone
thinks the problems they have are the worst in the world because they don’t
see the other guys’ problems. Come to the Kotel some afternoon and you may
see what I am talking about. Do you need a wheelchair?”
They all happily answered, ‘No.’
“Do you, G-d forbid, need a stick touching the ground in front of you
because you can’t see in front of you?”
They all said, ‘No’.
“Of course, our problems seem bad to us, but when you look at the good
things you have you see how blessed you really are. You came into the world
to use your good things, to share them with others, like this guy.”
I pointed to the boy with the most obvious physical handicap, but is a
boy who always smiles.
“You see this guy here. He loves to smile. He does it all the time.
Every day, he picks up other people just by smiling at them.”
I thanked him for making me happy.
“You didn’t come into the world to share your problems. You came into
the world to share your wonderful things. And remember, whenever you pick
up someone else, Hashem picks you up.”
Hashem bless Avi and his staff for guiding these boys and helping them
to learn Torah.
