Pray for Your Family
After he read the *Shema*, I told him to talk to Hashem in his heart,
but he didn’t want to listen to me. I tried a number of times, explaining
how it was a “time of favor” for his prayers, that Hashem listens to us
more closely when we are doing a *mitzvah,* but still, he wouldn’t do it.
He wouldn’t budge, no matter what I said.
I told him, “Pray for your family.”
He looked away.
Then I explained, “You can help them.”
He thought for a few seconds… then he turned toward the Kotel, lowered
his head so he was facing the ground, then he started to pray for his
family. He kept his eyes open, moved his lips as if he was speaking out
loud, but he didn’t make a sound. He kept praying, and praying for well
over a minute.
I was impressed by his love and devotion for his family. He wouldn’t
do it for me, but he would do it for them.
Everyone wants to do good, but you have to be able to explain it to
them in a way that they see the goodness in what you are saying.
