Highlights

     I enjoy spending time at the Kotel helping visitors to put on
tefillin. In of itself, if all I did was to bring them in and help them to
do the *mitzvah* of tefillin it would be a wonderful thing, but I have
learned there is more to the *mitzvah* than that.

     After they read the *Shema* in whatever language they speak, I tell
them what often turns out to be the highlight of their day, or maybe even
of their lives.

     “The *mitzvah* opens the door to Heaven. Go stand by Kotel and talk to
Hashem in your heart. Tell Him about the things that you need, for your
family, our soldiers, the Jews in danger, the virus… whatever is in your
heart... speak to Him.”

     Almost all of them try what I suggest, and although a few do not seem
to be moved, most of them have a meaningful experience. But maybe one out
of five of them really understands and “gets” what I am trying to share
with them. They either look me in the eye and sincerely say, ‘thank you,’
or they smile, or they grab my arm to show their appreciation, or like one
older Israeli last week … after he came back from talking to Hashem he
said, “You’re a *tzaddik*!”

     Why did he think I was so great? Because I showed him how to open his
heart by sincerely talking to Hashem.

     One of the essential aspects of Torah Observance is that we should
direct our hearts to Heaven, and this is exactly what we are doing when we
speak to Hashem in our heart.
