Hashem Wanted Him to Have it

     I thought to get a new *gartel*. “*Gartel*” is Yiddish for a “belt.”
Hasidim wear a *gartel* during prayers.

     For some reason, yesterday, on my way to *daven* *mincha* at the
Kotel, I went the longer way around so I would pass by the shop that sells
*gartels*. I never do this. When I leave for the Kotel I always take the
shortest, most pleasant way. I don’t shop on the way to go *daven*.

     I bought the *gartel* and headed for the Kotel, but for some reason I
turned one street sooner than usual and walked that way. I had both my old
and my new *gartel*, planning to leave the old one at the tefillin stand
for them to lend out.

     Then, someone I know, but rarely speak to, walked up to me and asked,
“Do you have a *gartel*?”

     Guess what!! I handed him the old *gartel,* and he said, “But, I need
it for a few hours.”

     I told him that I was on my way to give it away at the Kotel so he
could keep it.

     Oh, was he so happy! Not just because he got the *gartel* he was
looking for, but because he saw Hashem’s hand giving it to him.

     What happened? Why did I feel on the spot to turn and go buy a *gartel*?
Why did I take the unusual first turn to the Kotel which allowed him to see
me? Why of all people did he come up to me to ask for a *gartel*?
Obviously, Hashem wanted him to have a *gartel*.

     This is called *hashgacha pratit* (divine providence). This means that
G‑d not only knows what is going on here in our world, but He is engaged in
supervising it as well. Actually, Hashem is engaged in everything that
happens everywhere, so a better description of *hashgacha pratit *is when *we
see* that Hashem is engaged in our lives.

    *Hashgacha pratit *happens everywhere, all over the world, but it is
much easier to see it here in His holy city.
